Visual Recording in Others Work
This task focused on researching two artists and evaluating their art alongside. My tutor suggested modern artists such as Neville Brody. I chose to research Andy Warhol first as he was one of the most influential pop artists of the twentieth century. I then chose Neville Brody because he is very influential in the world of Graphic Design, and it would be interesting to emulate the style of his work for my final piece for this Unit. The questions I needed to answer when evaluating their art was first of all, what art elements are present in each specific pieces I chose, how they were made, what they contained, and the feeling they conveyed and so on and so forth.
Andy Warhol
I began by researching Andy Warhol, which wasn't difficult as he is a very well known Pop Artist, so there was copious amounts of information on him, although I wanted to keep my essay on him short and simple, so every little detail about Warhol is not present within my essay, my tutor wanted me to focus more on the artistic and career side, instead of the biographical side, such as family and illness.
I created a Pinterest board for Andy Warhol, to expose myself to more of his work, look for images to go into my art evaluation and my essay on him. It was very easy to find images, and I had no trouble finding what I wanted.

After this I moved onto evaluating his art, this was a little bit more difficult as finding the original photos of his art was not easy, Pinterest came in handy more than google strangely enough. Although evaluating his art was a breeze. I really enjoyed evaluating his art, and researching about him as I've always liked the Pop Art style, because of how mainstream and campy it is, I also really appreciate the ironic art of Roy Lichtenstiein, who I researched on a previous course.
Blotted Line Experiments
I did do some experiments with the blotted line technique, but they didn't go very well, either I was using the wrong materials or not pressing down for long enough, but the result definitely wasn't what I had hoped for, I watched tutorials online before having a go, but the technique didn't seem to work, maybe instead of pressing down on the paper, I should've pressed down and rubbed them together at the same time.
I think this technique definitely works, because I have seen other people doing it successfully, but maybe I was using the wrong materials. I used some tracing paper and some watercolour paper, the tutorials and my research had all said that you are supposed to use a non-absorbent type of paper (tracing paper) and then press the sketch you have drawn with the ink pen onto the absorbent paper (watercolour paper), and that it would leave a similar mark, but would display blotted lines instead of full, straight ones.

Neville Brody
I then moved onto researching Neville Brody, my essay is VERY brief, because it was difficult to find information on him, without going into too much detail. Although I did learn more interesting facts while actually evaluating his work. I found his work somewhat difficult to evaluate, as I have already evaluated page spreads, so I found it a little bit too easy to do.

I created boards to help me decide what Brody works I would be evaluating in my evaluation of his art. I found it a little difficult to differenciate between his actual work and other people work that have created Brody inspired works.

Although I did enjoy evaluating his Tina Turner and Cabaret Voltaire album cover design, I mainly focused on evaluating his art rather than his typography, although looking back evaluating his typography would have actually been a better choice!
I think this because after researching and evaluating Brody's work, I realised that he has in fact created some of his own personal fonts over the years. I think it could've been a little easier if I had taken more inspiration from his actual fonts rather than specific posters or magazine covers, and Fuse covers.
Although I think it was a good idea to look at his posters and take inspiration form them too as it helped me a lot in understanding the overall "composition" and how he tends to organise text and typography on a poster or cover to create impact, and make it artistic.
